Notes

• Myanmar has been in a state of civil war since the military coup in 2021, which deposed the civilian government.
• The military regime, led by Min Aung Hlaing, has attempted to legitimize its rule through stage-managed elections and the creation of a proxy political entity.
• Aung San Suu Kyi, the former State Counsellor, remains a central symbolic figure for the pro-democracy movement despite being detained.
• The National Unity Government (NUG) was formed by ousted parliamentarians to lead armed resistance alongside various ethnic armed organizations.
• The civil war has resulted in over 100,000 deaths since 2021.
• China has influenced the conflict by pressuring ethnic armed groups in the north to accept ceasefires, allowing the military to redirect forces to other fronts.
• The military regime has implemented a forced-conscription law to bolster its ranks.
• India has engaged with the military leadership to secure connectivity projects and access to rare earth minerals, while remaining wary of Chinese influence in the region.
• The Steering Council for the Emergence of a Federal Democratic Union (SCEF) has been formed to centralize resistance efforts against military rule.
