Ethanol blending policy

Notes

• Current ethanol blending limit in petrol is capped at 20%.
• No official decision has been made to increase blending beyond 20% or to introduce ethanol-diesel blending for commercial use.
• Future policy decisions regarding higher blending percentages depend on scientific evaluation, vehicle compatibility, stakeholder consultation, and domestic production capacity.
• In June 2024, the government exempted petrol blended with 22-30% ethanol from central excise duties to incentivize biofuel adoption.
• The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has established technical standards for the commercial rollout of higher ethanol-blended fuel.
