Amoebic meningoencephalitis in Kerala

Amoebic meningoencephalitis is a rare but life-threatening brain infection.
A recent case has been reported in the Kasaragod district of Kerala involving an 18-year-old patient.
The patient is currently in critical condition in an intensive care unit.
Preliminary investigation suggests the infection was contracted after the individual bathed in a pond along the Kanhangad-Panathur State highway.
The Kerala Health Department and local police have prohibited public bathing in the identified pond as a precautionary measure.

The study identified exposure to natural water bodies and the use of non-chlorinated water for domestic purposes as significant risk factors for AME.
Individuals using well water for bathing or washing their faces face 2.95 times higher odds of contracting AME.
The Population Attributable Fraction (PAF) for non-chlorinated well water as a risk factor is 34.2%.
Factors contributing to the proliferation of free-living amoeba (FLAs) in wells include heavy rainfall, flooding, sewage contamination, organic matter, and algal growth.
Poor maintenance of wells is identified as a critical factor in the contamination cycle.
