Saranaagathi and Bhakti Yoga

  • Bhakti Yoga is classified as Ashtanga Yoga (eight parts), while Prapatti or Saranaagathi is classified as Shadanga Yoga (six parts).
  • Saranaagathi is defined as the complete surrender of oneself to the Supreme Lord.
  • The practice of Saranaagathi is open to all beings, including humans, animals, and birds, without prerequisites.
  • The core requirement for Saranaagathi is Mahaa Viswaasam (deep and unshaken faith).
  • The six components of Shadanga Yoga are: Aanukoolya Sankalpam (resolve to be favourable to the Lord), Praathikoolya Varjanam (avoidance of displeasing actions), Rakshishyathi iti visvaasaha (faith in protection), Gopthruthva Varanam (appealing to the Lord as protector), Kaarpanyam (admitting helplessness), and Atmanivedanam (offering one's soul and responsibility to the Lord).
  • Swami Vedanta Desika elaborates on these concepts in verses 26 and 27 of the Saranaagathi Deepika.

Forms of worship in Hindu philosophy

  • Bhagavad Gita Canto 12 focuses on Bhakti Yoga, the yoga of devotion.
  • Hindu philosophy identifies two primary forms of worship: Saguna Upasana (devotion with attributes/manifestation) and Nirguna Upasana (formless devotion without attributes).
  • Saguna Upasana involves devotion to a personal form, which is considered more practical for embodied humans.
  • Nirguna Upasana involves a philosophical realisation of the formless, which is described as exceptionally difficult for the human mind that relies on names and forms.
  • The human mind and intellect naturally require a physical sensory focus for spiritual practice.
  • Saguna and Nirguna are described as two sides of the same coin; Saguna dhyana enhances the essence of Nirguna.
  • Saguna worship allows for emotional connection with the divine, viewed as a master, friend, child, beloved, or soul.
