The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved eight railway multi-tracking projects with a total outlay of ₹20,804 crore.
Projects aim to increase the Indian Railways network by 1,196 km across nine states: Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.
Key projects include multi-tracking of Arakkonam-Renigunta, Whitefield-Bangarapet, Hosur-Omalur, Salem-Karur-Dindigul, Secunderabad-Kazipet, Kharagpur-Jharsuguda, Katni-Pendra Road, and Bilaspur-Pendra Road.
The initiative is aligned with the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, focusing on multi-modal connectivity and logistics efficiency.
Expected outcomes include enhanced connectivity to over 6,900 villages and a population of approximately 1.08 crore.
The projects are designed to facilitate the transportation of essential commodities including coal, cement, iron, steel, petroleum products, and food grains.
Capacity augmentation is projected to generate an additional freight traffic capacity of 47 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).
