Government push for piped natural gas

The Central government has announced an incentive scheme for city-gas distributors (CGDs) to promote the adoption of piped natural gas (PNG).
Effective from September 1, eligible CGDs will receive an additional allocation of 200 standard cubic metres (SCM) of Administered Price Mechanism (APM) natural gas for every new billed domestic-PNG connection.
The primary objective of this policy is to help CGDs offset the higher costs associated with sourcing liquefied natural gas (LNG).
The initiative aims to accelerate the expansion of PNG infrastructure and increase the number of domestic connections across the country.

India's LPG consumption in August declined by 16.2% year-on-year to 2.424 million metric tonnes (MMT).
The decline in LPG demand is attributed to a structural shift toward Piped Natural Gas (PNG).
PNG connections increased by 36% between April and June, reaching 4.61 lakh, as reported by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board.
Industrial consumers are increasingly shifting to PNG due to concerns regarding the constant availability of bottled LPG.
Conversely, petrol and diesel consumption rose by 7.9% and 6.5% respectively in August.
Diesel demand growth was driven by increased usage of irrigation equipment due to a below-normal monsoon and higher transportation requirements.
