Narmada project payment agreement

Four states—Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh—have reached a one-time settlement agreement regarding pending payment issues related to the Sardar Sarovar Project.
The agreement addresses cost-sharing arrangements for the construction of the dam under the Narmada Award.
The settlement was facilitated by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti.
Recent inter-state water cooperation includes the Yamuna Water Project agreement between Rajasthan and Haryana (June 2024) and the Kishau Multipurpose Project MoU involving six states (Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan).
The Kishau Multipurpose Project aims to rejuvenate the Yamuna river.

A four-state agreement involving Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra was reached regarding the Narmada project.

The state government's financial liability was recalculated based on an Attorney General opinion from February 2026, which set the rehabilitation expenditure share at 31.98%.
The recent agreement reduced the rehabilitation share for Madhya Pradesh to 16.17%, resulting in a payment of approximately ₹231.80 crore.
