U.S. citizen arrested by NIA in Mizoram

Matthew Van Dyke, a U.S. citizen, was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) along with six Ukrainian nationals.
The accused are charged under Section 18 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Allegations involve illegal entry into Myanmar from Mizoram to train ethnic armed groups in weapons handling and drone warfare.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) filed a chargesheet against one U.S. national and six Ukrainian citizens arrested in March.
The accused were arrested at airports in Kolkata, Delhi, and Lucknow.
The chargesheet currently excludes provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), focusing instead on violations of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025.
The specific charges relate to Sections 21 and 23 of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, which are compoundable at the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO).
The NIA alleges the individuals entered India on tourist visas, traveled to the Northeast without mandatory permits, and crossed into Myanmar to train ethnic armed organisations.
The NIA indicated that a supplementary chargesheet may be filed in the future if evidence warrants UAPA charges.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is investigating six Ukrainian citizens and one U.S. national arrested in March.
The accused are charged with providing training to Myanmar-based ethnic armed groups, specifically the Chin National Front (CNF) and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA).
The training provided included drone assembly, drone operation, drone warfare, and jamming technology.
The NIA probe is currently examining whether these activities are prejudicial to India's national security.
