Electrocution of radio-tagged white-rumped vulture

A captive-bred, radio-tagged white-rumped vulture (Gyps bengalensis) died due to electrocution in Ebbanad village, Nilgiris district, Tamil Nadu.
The vulture was initially released in Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, Maharashtra, in December 2025.
The bird was relocated to Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) in April after showing signs of illness in Karnataka.
MTR is identified as a habitat for the last sizeable population of white-rumped vultures in South India.
The incident highlights the failure of the first reintroduction attempt of a captive-bred white-rumped vulture into the wild.
Conservationists suggest that power lines passing through vulture habitats require insulation and bunch-cabling to prevent wildlife electrocution.
