Artists in the Indian context encompass traditional, classical, folk, and contemporary creative practitioners who preserve intangible cultural heritage, generate informal livelihoods, and project the nation's soft power globally.

In General Studies Paper I, UPSC evaluates artists through the historical evolution of patronage systems, courtly versus popular traditions, and socio-religious influences.
