The Human Development Index is a summary composite statistic published by the United Nations Development Programme that assesses multi-dimensional progress across three core areas: health, education, and standard of living.

UPSC frequently uses HDI in General Studies Paper III to test candidates on the divergence between macroeconomic growth and human development outcomes. Questions typically require analyzing structural bottlenecks in social sector spending, sub-national variations in performance, and alternative metrics like the Inequality-adjusted HDI.
