Lok Sabha Elections

Lok Sabha Elections are the direct general elections held every five years to elect Members of Parliament to the lower house of the Indian Parliament using a first-past-the-post voting system based on universal adult suffrage.

• They operationalise the principle of popular sovereignty and establish parliamentary executive accountability under Article 75 of the Constitution.
• They test the institutional capacity and administrative autonomy of the Election Commission of India in exercising its powers under Article 324.
• They provide the empirical context for evaluating electoral reforms, including political finance transparency, candidate disclosure requirements, and the Model Code of Conduct.

UPSC frames questions on Lok Sabha elections primarily through the lens of constitutional provisions, statutory frameworks like the Representation of the People Acts, and administrative challenges. Candidates are expected to critically analyze systemic issues such as the criminalisation of politics, campaign finance transparency, and the operational feasibility of proposed reforms like simultaneous elections. Questions frequently evaluate the scope and limits of the Election Commission's plenary powers during the electoral process.
