The Sagarmala Project is a flagship national initiative designed to lower logistics costs and promote port-led development by modernizing port infrastructure, enhancing hinterland connectivity, and integrating coastal economic zones.

• It targets the reduction of domestic logistics overheads by shifting freight from congested rail and road corridors to coastal shipping and inland waterways.
• It accelerates export-led manufacturing by clustering industrial units near maritime hubs via Coastal Economic Zones.
• It fosters the blue economy and coastal community development through modernized fishing harbors, marine tourism, and localized skill development programs.

UPSC frames questions on Sagarmala under GS Paper III infrastructure and GS Paper I economic geography, focusing on the mechanics of port-led growth versus traditional inland development. Questions frequently evaluate logistics efficiency, last-mile multimodal connectivity bottlenecks, and public-private partnership models in port infrastructure. Candidates are expected to analyze its role in regional trade integration while balancing environmental and coastal livelihoods concerns.
