• The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly unanimously passed a resolution mandating the rendition of the state song, 'Tamil Thai Vazhthu', before the commencement of events in all educational, government, and public institutions.
• The song is derived from 'Manonmaniam', written by Manonmaniam Sundaranar in 1891.
• The state government first issued an order for the song to be sung at government functions on November 23, 1970.
• The state government formally recognized it as the official state song on December 12, 2021.
• The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) clarified before the Madras High Court that there is no central directive mandating that state songs must be sung after the national song or national anthem.
• The MHA clarified that its guidelines only specify the order of precedence between the national song and the national anthem when they are performed together.
• The issue was brought before the Madras High Court via a public interest litigation (PIL) challenging an MHA notification dated January 28, 2026, which was subsequently replaced by a new notification on July 9, 2026.
