Information Technology encompasses the infrastructure, software systems, and digital networks used to collect, process, store, and transmit data for public administration, economic activity, and security.

• It acts as a foundational pillar for e-governance, enhancing public service delivery, administrative efficiency, and fiscal transparency through digital platforms.
• It serves as a key driver of India's tertiary economy, export revenue, and technical employment while addressing structural governance deficits.
• It creates critical regulatory, ethical, and security challenges concerning data privacy, cybersecurity, state surveillance, and the digital divide.

UPSC primarily frames questions on Information Technology at the intersection of governance, security, and socio-economic development under General Studies Papers II and III. The exam tests candidates on the efficacy of digital public infrastructure, the regulatory architecture governing data protection and cybersecurity, and the societal impacts of the digital divide. Answers require a balanced assessment of technological capability against legal, constitutional, and administrative safeguards.
