• Regional disparities exist: southern states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh have low enrolment, while Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha report 80%-99% enrolment.
• The Indian Nursing Council cites jurisdictional issues and federal tension as reasons for delay, noting that primary registration is the legal responsibility of State Nursing Registration Councils.
• State councils often maintain independent parallel systems and resist full migration to the central portal.
• Consequences of poor registration include delays in inter-State transfers, credential verification for overseas employment, and inaccurate data on nurse availability and specialisations.
• Fragmented registries pose risks to patient safety by allowing unverified individuals or those with revoked licences to practice.
• A live, centralised registry is critical for resource deployment, policy implementation, and mobilisation of specialised personnel during public health emergencies.
